WELCOME TO
BLUE LAND
Cultivating the Ocean, Nurturing the Future
From the seabed of Higashimatsushima begins a project for biodiversity and environmental restoration.
Through research, verification, and collaboration, we are building a sustainable relationship between the ocean and people.
The Higashimatsushima BLUELAND Project is a participatory environmental initiative dedicated to restoring the rich ocean (BLUE) of Higashimatsushima City in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, while also conserving and regenerating the connected woodlands and farmlands (LAND).
In recent years, climate crisis and environmental change have severely impacted coastal marine ecosystems, with the decline of biodiversity, especially in seaweed beds and biodiversity - becoming increasingly critical. Focusing on the restoration of these marine environments, the Higashimatsushima BLUELAND Project works to rebuild the essential connections between nature, people, and society.
By collaborating with fishers, academia, government, private sectors, and local communities, we are implementing long-term and fundamental climate change measures. Our goal is to enhance both the natural environment and livelihoods of Higashimatsushima, and to establish a sustainable “Blue Earth” model—the BLUELAND model—for future generations.
